A Balanced Perspective of Life

One of my psychotherapy clients describes believing in or placing trust in people as “living in La La Land.” When we have been abused or severely hurt it is difficult to see the good in others or to trust anyone – even God. But no matter how painful our past or how bleak our future appears, we can still have a balanced, positive outlook on life.

When God completed the creation of the universe – including the Earth and all living things, He looked at all he had made and said, “It is good!” Although evil entered our world, God’s goodness and grace still shine brightly in the darkness.

Only an all-knowing righteous God can be truly objective. And if God says His creation is good, who are we to dispute His assessment? To have a balanced, accurate view of life we need to remember the wonder of God’s creation, and then do our best to view ourselves and our circumstances, through the loving eyes of God.

God’s Word promises that “all things work together for good to those who love God” (Rom 8:28). While this doesn’t mean we should deny feelings of sadness, loneliness, anger, or fear – always pretending everything is fine, it does mean we can be optimistic and hopeful no matter what.

When we consider all God has done for us, and the greatest gift of all – eternal life through Christ, there is much to celebrate!

The apostle Paul encourages us to think about the right things and to focus on all that is good. “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8)

Jesus said he came to give us life – abundantly and in full measure (John 10:10). As we develop and maintain a healthy, balanced perspective, trusting in God’s goodness, He can lift us above our difficulties into a fully satisfying life in Christ.

  1. This is a very uplifting blog. Concentrating on the goodness of God instead of being so inward and not seeing the good in other people. By placing our trust in God we then can better trust others.
